For the Birds

Noticing the little, everyday things make life so much nicer. I adore the birds that fill the yard and the skies with their grace, and singing. I enjoy making their lives a little easier too! Especially in the winter, birds struggle to find food sources and water. I have a bird bath set up in the front yard and I have noticed birds and beautiful deer drinking peacefully from it.

Two house sparrows take shelter from the storm.

I set up feeders on the front porch. That means we track in sunflower seed shells, but it is a small price to pay to see all the kitties lined up by the window watching the birds flit around.

We put our Christmas tree outside on its side near the porch and it is filled with birds finding shelter and taking a rest. The garland on the front porch also serves as a place for the birds to sit and have meetings. It will come down soon now that (in my mind) it’s spring, but I will find a garland of lights to replace it.

I love my Merlin bird app. I have over a hundred birds on my life list and I can use it to identify the bird, and as I see it visually, I remember it’s song. So, when we are out hiking or a walk, I can usually identify local birds just by hearing their sweet singing or seeing them in trees. It adds so much joy to my life.

It is fascinating to see the social structures of other beings. It helps us step back from our own struggles or busy days when we can sit and watch nature at its finest. It’s nice to realize that we are interconnected with all creatures and are a part of a bigger picture. It’s nice to enjoy the peace of a feeder of birds.

Creating spaces for birds to find nesting materials, shelter, food, and water are all ways to give back to nature and reap many rewards for one’s spirit.
