Curbside Furniture

I don’t mean the kind of curbside furniture that you order ahead and they bring it out to your car. I mean the kind that if your husband sees it first, he kind of picks up speed so its too late to stop!

Lucky for me, the neighbors put this beauty out at the curb so all I had to do was saunter out there and bring it home!

I left the table on the carport to start because it smelled so strongly of animal urine. So much so, that I couldn’t tell if it itself had been peed on. It was covered in melted candle wax and finger nail polish. But I could see through it all.

It’s been awhile since I saved furniture from the curb. Some of my favorite pieces in my life came from the curb. A little scrubbing, maybe a coat of paint, or new knobs, and new life is given to an old piece of furniture. Doug always jokes that he’d like us to be rich enough that we don’t have to slow down for every piece of discarded furniture! The past few houses we have moved into, we have bought new furniture for. We spent thousands and most of those have since fallen apart. I think I will go back to my second hand ways.

I left the table to linger in the sun to help with the odor and to melt the wax. I gently scraped away the softened wax with a plastic spoon wrapped in paper towel. I scrubbed the whole thing a few times with soap and water. Glass cleaner cleaned the glass and got off the polish and remaining wax off. Seventh Generation disinfectant spray finally got out most of the aroma and then I oiled the whole thing with a mixture of olive oil, cedar and rose essential oils. Then it was perfect.

This mahogany table is getting a new life. It turned out so beautiful! Curbside furniture is a great way to be kinder to the environment, your pocketbook, and to add beauty and fun to your abode. You just have to spot it before your husband does!

  1. In my past life I would purposefully look for curbside beauties. Kat and I got really good at “restoring” them. I found the process extremely rewarding. I’m NO expert but in my humble opinion the table looks like it could well be an antique. Maghanoy with a fitted inlayed glass top and the leg design is screaming to me. Look it over carefully for any maker/manufacturer’s markings. Do some internet research to see if you can find similar types of tables. I’m willing to bet you picked up a treasure. Love Ya…. Let me know what you find……. Rod

      • Hey Sweetie:

Don’t discount that yet. The Thomasville company has been around since 1904 (120 years). To be an antique the table only needs to be over 100 years old. With that it could still be in the range. Regardless, whether or not it’s an antique it’s still an awesome piece. Enjoy the process. Love Ya Both……… Rod
